Hredux: Mother's Day and Peace

Like many holidays that have been hijacked by commercial interests, Mother's Day was proclaimed in 1870 by Julia Ward Howe as a reaction to the carnage of the Civil War. The trip to Applebee's and the Target gift certificates came much later.
